The Voter's Guidebook

11th June 2024
Don't get sandbagged by the election - use our voters guidebook to make a plan and cruise past the crux like it was nothing!
It may sound over the top, but making a plan to vote ensures participation, reduces barriers, increases confidence, and encourages informed decision-making. That means that come election day you’ll be primed to SEND IT.

Route: 2024 General Election

Save the Date and Time:
Mark your calendar with the date of the general election, the polling hours, and any other deadlines. Polling stations are typically open from 7 am to 10 pm. We’ve noted some key dates below for you - put them in your diary.
  • 18 June - Deadline to register to vote (by midnight)
  • 19 June - Deadline for new postal vote applicants or amending existing absent voting arrangements
  • 26 June - Deadline for new applications to vote by proxy (5pm) and voter ID cards
  • 4 July - Polling day

Check Your Voter Registration:
Ensure you are registered to vote. If you're not registered, you can do so online or by contacting your local electoral registration office.
If you split your time between two addresses, such as being a student living away from home, you may be eligible to register to vote at both addresses, provided they are in different council areas. However, you are only allowed to vote at one address in UK Parliament elections, and you can choose which area to vote in. It is illegal to vote more than once in the same election.
Identify Necessary Documents:
You need an ID to vote in the general election. Take a driving licence, passport, or other government-issued ID. You can also apply for a voter ID card - the deadline for this is 26th June. Learn more here.
Decide How to Vote:
Choose your preferred method of voting. You can vote in person at your polling station, by post, or by proxy (appointing someone to vote on your behalf).
Apply for a Postal Vote (If Necessary):
If you're unable to vote in person, apply for a postal or proxy vote well in advance of the election. Apply here.
Research the Candidates and Parties:
Familiarise yourself with the candidates and political parties contesting the election. Consider their policies, promises, and track records to make an informed decision. There's more information on their climate policies here.

Route Finding:
Confirm where your polling station is located. You can find this information on your polling card or by contacting your local electoral registration office.
Plan Your Journey:
Determine how you will travel to your polling station. If necessary, arrange transportation in advance to ensure you can vote without any obstacles.
Set Aside Time:
Allocate time in your schedule on election day to visit the polling station. Avoid scheduling conflicting appointments or commitments that may prevent you from voting.
Worked your way through all of that? Ace! Pledge to vote with climate in mind on the 4th of July
