Who we are
Protect Our Winters UK is an outdoor climate action charity, and we help passionate outdoor people become effective climate advocates to achieve systemic solutions to climate change.
What we do
We deliver community education and engagement programmes, organisational climate action support, and campaign for systemic policy solutions.
Why we do it
We're in a climate emergency and time to act is running out. Together, outdoors people can be a force for positive change.
Our History
In 2007, pro snowboarder Jeremy Jones saw that more and more resorts he'd always counted on for good riding were closed due to lack of snow. Something was clearly going on, and he felt the need to act. But, he couldn't find any organisations focused on mobilising the outdoor community on climate. So, Jeremy founded Protect Our Winters.
Fast forward ten years, to a group of UK outdoor enthusiasts seeing the impact POW was having and wanting to replicate it in the UK. So they founded POW UK in 2017.
What started out as a few volunteers, has grown into a team of 4.5 staff, 6 community reps, 8 trustees, 50 volunteers, 40 corporate partners and an ever-growing alliance of athletes, creatives, and scientists in 2021.
WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO
We're not just skiers and snowboarders. We're climbers, hillwalkers, mountain bikers, paddle boarders, and surfers. We come alive in the outdoors, and harness our connection to wild places as a force for positive change. We might be dirtbags, but we're dirtbags making a difference.
We're coming together as a loud, passionate, and insistent outdoor community to influence climate policy to protect the places we love. We see climate breakdown happening in our playgrounds, and we're communicating that message to policymakers to protect our planet today and for future generations.
The stable climate we have enjoyed for the last 10,000 years is wobbling, but we can still change course and stop that wobble.
We must act now to protect the places we love for future generations.
Protect Our Winters UK is an independent charity, separate from the other POW chapters and responsible our own funding and campaigns. We work collaboratively with all POW chapters on cross-border and international campaigns to increase our impact worldwide.
