UK Hit By Record-Breaking Heatwave
Climate change hit UK headlines in a big way recently, and for good reason. The UK sweltered in an extreme heatwave, an undeniable symptom of the climate crisis. It was a grim week.
- The Met office issued its first-ever red extreme heat warning.
- UK temperatures hit 40 degrees last week - a new, exceptionally troubling record.
- And a national emergency was declared. This is more than just a passing summer heatwave - it's climate change, and a glimpse into what the climate crisis will bring if we don't act immediately. Beyond the risk to public health and impact on public services in the UK, this extreme heat has dire consequences for communities and environments around the globe. We're on a profoundly dangerous trajectory.

There has been a small forest fire burning in the Courchevel area in the French Alps for over 4 days now. A European heatwave and a very dry year are to blame. A place we've shredded in white fluffy snow is now ablaze. The climate crisis is here. And it's impacting the places we love.

So what does this mean for climate action?
- The leadership race will be a big distraction from the climate crisis.
- Even longer delays in passing new, effective climate policy.
- The potential for a new PM who has an even worse environmental policy. We don’t have an ambitious enough climate policy in place as it stands to meet the targets later this decade. And some of the potential front runners are associated with climate denial. All of this makes the need to ramp up government policy even more urgent. One thing is clear: we need more outdoor lovers to take climate action. We’re growing our community now so that when it’s time to act, we’re ready. It’s now more important than ever to be a force for positive, systemic change.
We Must Take Action
This isn't the lightest of reads, and many, if not all of these articles fail to highlight what we know we need to do to curb climate change.
We must embrace:
- Renewable energy
- Electric transportation
- Green finance
- And a managed decline of fossil fuel extraction
