POW UK Advocates in Westminister

20th September 2023

Send It For Climate took POW UK to Westminster!

On Monday, POW UK embarked on an advocacy trip to Westminster to voice the concerns of passionate outdoor people like you.
We met with Shadow Minister for Climate Change, Kerry McCarthy MP, to discuss our Send It For Climate Campaign and the policy commitments we need to see ahead of the General Election.

Right by our side, standing in solidarity, was our partner, Ellis Brigham, and POW UK Ambassador and 2x UCI MTB Downhill World Champion, Manon Carpenter.

In the meeting, we advocated for the protection of the things that we love from climate change. We asked that the next UK Government fully commits to getting UK policy on track for net zero emissions by committing to these deliverables in the next General Election party manifestos:
  • Phasing out fossil fuels, including ending new extraction and the Maximise Economic Recovery policy within one year of forming the next Government.
  • Unblocking onshore wind, setting up a taskforce and installation targets within one year of forming the Government.
  • Providing greater resilience for those with at-risk electrical grids, including unblocking community energy projects and stronger support for insulation improvements.
  • Delivering improved public transport cost and resilience, especially to rural recreational areas.
  • Delivering Just Transition job support for those in at-risk rural tourism industries.

In order to ensure strong decision making across government, and the capability to take account of all groups needs, we also request commitment that:
  • All ministers and shadow ministers become certified Carbon Literate within three months of taking post.
  • The Government listens to the outdoor industry and community when delivering its Net Zero plans by setting up an Advisory Council for the just transition of remote & outdoor communities, to include both industry and community representatives.

Advocacy meetings with decision-makers are the epitome of our work, and it's how we'll bring the systemic change needed to combat climate change, protect the outdoors, and create healthier communities. Our Send It For Climate campaign made this meeting happen. Our campaign asks have been heard, but now we need the entire outdoor community to support our campaign and show that there is widespread demand for ambitious climate policy.

SEND IT for climate and send a clear message to decision makers. Let's get the UK back on track to net zero!
